Russian Federation seeks dissolution of renowned human rights organisation.
Pax Christi International partner in Russia and winner of the 2013 Pax Christi International Peace Prize, Memorial International, is under threat. The organisation and its Memorial Human Rights Center are in danger of being dissolved. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has filed a lawsuit seeking their dissolution over repeated violations of the country’s legislation on “foreign agents.”
We are deeply shocked by the intensification of actions by the Russian Federation to silence voices and to dangerously narrow civic space for non-governmental organizations. Pax Christi International calls on Russia to immediately withdraw the motion to dissolve Memorial International and the Memorial Human Rights Centre. We are mobilizing our members to write to Memorial and to national governments around the world to intercede on Memorial’s behalf.
We have also taken action through our representative at the Council of Europe and its Conference of International Non-governmental Organisations. We have also collaborated with other Catholic international organisations on this dire situation. Please click here for this statement.
