In preparation for the Season of Creation, from September 1st, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, to October 4th, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, LISTEN, the Laudato si’ International Tertiary Education Network (listen.mn.co) invited Jim Hug, SJ to prepare a Catholic Liturgical Guide on the theme, “Listen to the Voice of Creation.” The Voice of Creation is emitting an anguished call for nonviolent solutions to the violence of climate change, loss of biodiversity, destruction of habitat, the lack of access to clean water, and the enormous impact of human violence on the biosphere. Violence in every form—direct, cultural and structural—is assaulting our common home and compounding the growing crisis that threatens the very survival of our planet. The earth is suffering from the violence of indifference and domination, war and militarisation, and destructive extractivism. Key to achieving a Laudato Si’ future is grounding our efforts in the power of active nonviolence.
