In a statement published in July, the Europe–Central Africa Network (EurAc) expressed serious concern over the rapid deterioration of civic and democratic space in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
EurAc, of which Pax Christi International is also a member, denounced the growing repression of civil society, political opponents, activists, journalists and human rights defenders, as well as increasing restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The statement also draws attention to recent violence and abuses attributed to actors linked to the ruling party, as well as cases of arbitrary arrests and detentions.
EurAc calls on the European Union and its Member States to take a more active role in responding to these developments, using the diplomatic tools at their disposal to denounce human rights violations and support Congolese civil society. The statement is available below in English and French.
