Today, a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was published, calling for the current fossil fuel crisis affecting Europe to be the last. The letter, presented by Transport & Environment, was signed by more than 200 civil society organisations and environmental NGOs, including Pax Christi International.

The letter highlights how continued dependence on fossil fuels exposes citizens and businesses to high energy costs and increasingly severe consequences of the climate crisis.

Ahead of the upcoming State of the Union address, European and international organisations are therefore calling on President von der Leyen to commission an independent, science-based report, developed with input from academia, civil society, social partners and businesses. The aim is to establish a shared strategy and a concrete plan to phase out fossil fuels through renewable energy, energy efficiency, modern grids and circular economy solutions.
