Australia: Pax Christi Australia hosts national conference asking, "Why are we violent?"

23/7/19 - Pax Christi Australia is hosting a national conference entitled, "Why Are We Violent?", from Friday, 16 August to Sunday, 18 August.

International and national, personal and community arenas continue to be marked by the pervasive reality of human violence in some form or another. Why does violence occur? This is the subject of the conference.

The keynote speaker is Dr Susan Connelly, a Josephite Sister, who has closely studied these issues — especially through the writings of social thinker René Girard — and has worked with the people of Timor Leste for over 20 years. She will facilitate discussion around key themes of the conference so relevant for our times: What is it that makes us violent? What is scapegoating? What role for nonviolence and forgiveness?

Larry Marshall, who has worked for many years on the conflict in Sri Lanka, will speak on the urgent challenges facing that country, how violence has played out, and the continuing efforts towards conflict resolution and reconciliation.

The venue is Kildara Centre, Rear 41 Stanhope Street, Malvern.
