Democratic Republic of Congo: Les Amis de Nelson Mandela pour la défense des Droits Humains (ANMDH) held a press conference regarding the elections of 30 December 2018

2/2/19 - In Kinshasa on 14 January 2019, our member organisation, Les Amis de Nelson Mandela pour la défense des Droits Humains (ANMDH) held a press conference regarding the elections of 30 December 2018 in the DR Congo. Their statement read, in part:

"Let us begin this press conference by welcoming you and thanking you for your presence and taking the opportunity to present our best wishes for the coming 2019.

"Indeed, we remind many of you that almost a month since the start of the electoral campaign on Thursday, 11 October 2018, our organisation ANMDH, in consultation with several human rights organisations based in Kinshasa and the provinces, organised a "Citizen Debate" in the Great Hall of Saint Joseph parish of Matonge on the theme: "Public Liberty in Danger , non-credible elections, human rights violations before, during and after elections; WHAT TO DO?"

"The initiative was an opportunity to alert Congolese leaders, political party leaders and their supporters that the electoral process is indeed being monitored by Human Rights Defenders across the country. Above all, we wanted to let them know in advance that all their acts and statements during this process are and will always be monitored by the NGOs.

"Thus, to facilitate the monitoring and documentation of human rights violations related to the elections, a group called the "Network of Truth Seekers" was set up on social networks to enable defenders of human rights and pro-democracy activists to share information across the national territory. This information we received regularly and in real time via the Internet..."
