Guatemala: Monitoring report of homicidal violence January – December 2016

On January 14, President Jimmy Morales will complete his first 365 days in the highest office in the executive branch in Guatemala. He has succeeded on some issues but he also has made some wrong decisions. In this report we measure some of the actions developed by the Ministry of the Interior on the issue of security.

The security issue covers many aspects, not only homicidal deaths occurring in the country. It also includes, for instance, disappearances, which have increased since 2011. On the other hand there are also crimes such as extortion and crimes against property that have been impossible to eradicate in the country. All of the crimes mentioned above have some relation to the number of homicidal deaths, which is the final and tragic point that violence brings to Guatemalans.
