Italy: Pax Christi Italy joins the protest over the Giro d'Italia taking place in Israel

17/4/18 - Pax Christi joins the chorus of protest voices regarding the decision to have the first three stages of the Giro d'Italia in Israel next May. It is clear that this great media event is being exploited to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the State of Israel, but for Palestinians, this anniversary represents the "Nakba" (catastrophe). In addition, athletes will travel by pedaling through a country where the scandalous violations of Palestinian human rights, their oppression, and the apartheid regime are equally evident. We therefore fully share this note of a transversal group that signs itself "catanesinpalestina".


Among the good reasons to wait with excitement for the arrival of Spring is that many Italians look forward to the return of cycling races: the races at the beginning of the season already in February-March; the "classics" of March-April; and, most awaited by all, the Giro d'Italia, a real popular festival and one of the few events that are able to excite the national spirit (the football league divides, the Giro unites the fans of all cyclists)...
