Japan: Pax Christi International sends message to Pope in preparation of his November visit to Japan

3/7/19 - Pope Francis will be in Japan 23–26 November to visit Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. Pax Christi International, with input from our Japanese member organisation, the Japan Catholic Council for Justice and Peace, has written a letter to thank him for his leadership on nuclear disarmament and kindly ask for his visit to Japan to include:

  • The delivery of a message calling for the complete and urgent abolition of nuclear weapons.
  • Meeting with representatives of the hibakusha and with witnesses for peace from Plowshares, an affirmation of the "Hibakusha Appeal" international signature campaign.
  • A call to the government of Japan to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, to step away from reliance on nuclear arms and to provide leadership for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

In May 2020, Pax Christi International will also make a pilgrimage to Hiroshima to celebrate the 75th anniversary of our movement and the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
