Members of the General Assembly of Pax Christi International, gathered in Brussels, Belgium, express their solidarity with the Ingushetian activists who were peacefully protesting in the Republic of Ingushetia, Russian Federation, and are currently being held in custody due to falsified and politically motivated accusations. We would like to specifically draw attention to the cases of Barakh Chemurziev, Akhmet Barakhoev, Bagaudin Khautiev, Malsag Uzhakhov and Musa Malsagov.

As a peace movement we support the efforts of the Ingushetian people for a democratic society, their demand for direct and fair elections of the president of the Ingushetian Republic, and the right to be heard by those in power.

The Ingushetian Council of Teyps (a representative association of all Ingushetian clans, based on equality and collaborative decision-making) is enduring political persecution and serious pressure from the authorities. In the beginning of the people’s protests (i.e. as of 26th September 2018), the Ingushetian Ministry of Justice suspended the activity of this organisation. Later on it charged the council’s president, Malsag Uzhakhov—already in custody at that time—with additional unfounded accusations.

We ask for the quick release of these political prisoners and the cessation of charges against them. More generally, we also request that authorities create conditions for the development of a civil society in Ingushetia, granting the citizens their rights and freedoms.
