World Gathering 2020 in Hiroshima, Japan
The Promise of Peace
May 18-22, 2020
The year is 1945. A French bishop is returning home from a detention camp after being arrested by the Gestapo for speaking out against the persecution of Jews. He encounters a laywoman who is trying to make sense of how two peoples, many of whom share a common faith—German and French Catholics—have slaughtered each other by the millions twice now in less than 30 years. Together the bishop and the laywoman will build a movement of reconciliation and peace that will spread to every corner of the globe.
That same year, humankind’s most violent chapter is devastatingly inaugurated 14,000 kilometers away in Hiroshima, Japan. The atomic age is born in ash and fire, and the bombs dropped by the U.S. on Hiroshima and Nagasaki will signal how, for the first time in history, humanity holds the power of its own total destruction in its hands.
The year is 2020 and Pax Christi International—that movement born 75 years ago with the promise of peace—gathers in Hiroshima in the 75th anniversary year of the first atomic bomb. Members and supporters gather to REMEMBER and to RISE, recounting their concurrent history and all it has meant while rising up to answer the challenge of peace in our world today and for tomorrow. Will you be there?
Pax Christi International invites you to the 2020 World Gathering, “Remember, Rise: The Promise of Peace”, in Hiroshima, Japan, 18-22 May. Join us in the city that cries out for an end to the nuclear madness that dropped from its skies 75 years ago. Join us as we commemorate that anniversary, hear the stories of the people who survived that day, and pledge ourselves anew to work for a world free of nuclear weapons.
Join your sisters and brothers from our member organisations around the world as we take the lessons we’ve learned from 75 years of practicing reconciliation and pursuing peace to inspire our dreams for the next 75 years, harnessing the power of nonviolence to create cultures of peace.
This worldwide gathering is your chance to explore what it means to be peacemakers in an increasingly interreligious context, to network with experienced peace practitioners and share best practices, to be inspired by the stories of the people of Hiroshima, and to celebrate our movement while envisioning a better future we will build together.
This is our moment. We need you there in Hiroshima in May. Together we remember. Together we rise. Join us.
