A week ago Martha Inés Romero, Secretary General of Pax Christi International, travelled to our organisation’s headquarters in Brussels to continue her coordination work with the various European sections.

She first met with Fidel García Gutiérrez, Secretary General of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Spanish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, in Madrid, to strengthen their partnership and explore joint initiatives related to the Latin America programme supporting communities resisting the extractive industry through nonviolent means and defending their Mother Earth.

Together with Pax Christi International’s Africa Regional Coordinator, Dieudonné Serukabuza, she then travelled to Aachen, Germany, to meet with Missio, the German Bishops’ Programme for Africa. The delegation met with Dr Guy Adjadji from the Department of International Relations. Over the past two years, young people from Burundi, accompanied by religious sisters trained in active nonviolence, protection and trauma healing, have benefited from Missio’s Christian solidarity.

The delegation then moved from Aachen to Mainz. There, together with Pax Christi International’s Co-President Sister Teresia Wamuyu Wachira, she visited pax christi Germany. The meeting focused on a shared pathway to strengthen the movement and develop common strategic actions for the peace and ecological mission at both European and global levels, including conscientious objection, disarmament, and solidarity for a just peace in the Holy Land. Also present at the meeting was Jeroen Van de Loo, Board Member of PAX Netherlands and a friend of Pax Christi International programmes.

In the coming weeks, Martha Inés Romero will continue her work across Europe, engaging with partners and member organisations to advance joint initiatives and strengthen the collective commitment to Nonviolence.
