Pax Christi International is honoured to be part of the organising team of Nuclear Abolition Day (26 September), a global campaign that calls on governments, faith leaders, and civil society to take urgent action towards eliminating nuclear weapons.
This International Day of Action coincides with the UN International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which highlights the ongoing threat that nuclear weapons pose to humanity and the planet. Despite decades of advocacy and treaties, nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons still exist today, and the risk of their use, whether by accident, miscalculation, or deliberate escalation, remains alarmingly real.
As a global Catholic peace movement, Pax Christi International believes that nuclear weapons are incompatible with peace, justice, and care for creation. Together with partners around the world, we are committed to raising awareness, mobilising communities, and calling on leaders to choose life instead of destruction.
We warmly invite organisations, individuals, and faith leaders to endorse this initiative and take part in the campaign by:
- Endorsing the September 26 Joint Appeal which calls on governments to use the opportunity of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and the UN High Level Plenary Meeting on September 26 to announce concrete plans to prevent nuclear war, shift nuclear weapons budgets and investments to strengthen the UN, advance peacekeeping and conflict resolution, accelerate steps to protect the climate, and meet human and economic needs as required under Article 26 of the UN Charter. The appeal is open to endorsement by individuals and organisations and will be presented to world leaders at the UN on September 26.
- Undertaking the September 26 social media action Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in our Hands. This action – which can be done by anyone, anywhere – is based on a hand raised with palm facing forwards, which is a universal message to stop. Hands are also what we use to greet each other, create things and build cooperation. For examples, please visit Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in our Hands.
- Posting your Nuclear Abolition Day event on our calendar to inform and engage others, or join an event already being planned. See Nuclear Abolition Day Events.
- Add your organisation as a Nuclear Abolition Day participating organisation. Participating organisations are those that support Nuclear Abolition Day, and are planning on engaging in an action or event for the day, even if this is just to endorse the Appeal. Our impact on governments increases if we can show hundreds or thousands of participating organisations. Send your logo to info@nuclearabolitionday.org so that your organisation can be added to the online list of participating organisations, which is on About Nuclear Abolition Day.
Every voice matters in this movement. Together, we can help shift the global conversation and press leaders to commit to genuine disarmament.
