On Belgian National Day, His Majesty the King of Belgium delivered a deeply moving speech, drawing urgent attention to the devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Describing the situation as a “disgrace to humanity,” the King called for swift and decisive action to end the suffering and uphold human dignity.
He said, “The current situation has gone on for far too long. It is a disgrace to all humanity. We support the call by the United Nations Secretary-General to immediately end this unbearable crisis.”
Central to his address was a recent meeting that profoundly touched him, with Bassam and Rami of the Parents Circle Family Forum, joined by representatives of Pax Christi International and Actions in the Mediterranean. It was this encounter, rooted in personal stories and human connection, that inspired the King’s urgent call to conscience and leadership.
At Pax Christi International, we believe that recognising each other’s humanity is fundamental. Genuine human connection is the only path to a just and lasting peace. This recognition must guide all efforts to resolve this and other conflicts around the world.
In the days preceding his speech, the King also met with representatives of humanitarian NGOs, affirming His commitment to humanitarian values and the urgent need to support those suffering.
This public and explicit condemnation of the Gaza crisis by a reigning royal, combined with his direct engagement with peacebuilding organisations, is a first. It marks a courageous and necessary step, setting an important precedent for others in positions of influence to speak out in defence of human dignity and just peace.
