At the conclusion of COP30, held from 10 to 21 November in Belém, Brazil, the humanitarian and Catholic leaders present issued a joint statement, inviting Catholics around the world to sign it. Yesterday, Pax Christi International also added its name to the millions of signatures already collected.
In a world marked by increasingly fragile climate systems and growing environmental degradation, the words of Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ resonate more strongly than ever. In Brazil, participants were able to gather as a united and synodal Church, celebrating together a Creation that must be protected and safeguarded, now more than ever.
In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis, boldly confronting the reality of climate change, called for an “ecological conversion.” Pope Leo XIV, in a message addressed to those gathered in Belém, expressed his hope that “all participants in this COP30, as well as those actively following its work, be inspired to embrace with courage this ecological conversion in thought and action, keeping in mind the human face of the climate crisis.”
