Pax Christi International is among the voices worldwide gathered for Nuclear Abolition Day 2025. For the twelfth year, since the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 68/32 in 2013 declaring 26 September the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, citizens, associations, collectives, and movements from across the globe have been organising events and undertaking actions in support of the total abolition of nuclear weapons and the threat they pose to humanity.
“Humanity is headed in the wrong direction. It is time to chart a new course for lasting peace through disarmament” stated António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations. “On this important day, I call on states that possess nuclear weapons to lift this shadow hanging over humanity. Honour your disarmament obligations and commit to the total elimination of nuclear weapons”.
This year, the campaign is also strengthened by the voice of Hollywood actor Michael Douglas, United Nations Messenger of Peace:
The Joint Appeal
Pax Christi International is among the humanitarian organisations worldwide that have endorsed the Joint Appeal for September 26, which today was presented at the annual meeting convened by the United Nations with world leaders to discuss measures that could launch a process towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons. The endorsement joins more than a thousand others from associations and private citizens, united in a call for a world free from its most dangerous weapon.
Among the Working Group Members who collaborated to bring the initiative to life, there is also Giulia Bordin, Advocacy Officer of Pax Christi International.

‘Peace is in our Hands’ Campaign
The collective commitment to Nuclear Abolition Day 2025 has also been carried forward through the campaign “Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in our Hands”, which gathered the support of a large number of citizens.
People from all over the world shared photos of their peaceful protest, with one hand raised: a collective sign forming the universal symbol for stop, so that these very same hands may tomorrow be used only as instruments of peace and cooperation, not of destruction.
