On July 25th , Giulia Bordin, Advocacy Officer at Pax Christi International, along with a delegation from Pax Christi Flanders, attended the opening day of the “Doing Justice, Loving Mercy” conference on Palestinian Liberation Theology, held in Helvoirt from 25 to 27 July 2025. Organised by Kairos-Sabeel Netherlands, Bethlehem Bible College and Christelijk Collectief, the event brought together theologians, activists and faith leaders to explore the role of Western Christians in supporting justice for Palestinians.
The conference began with a warm welcome and introduction at midday, followed by an engaging keynote from Rev. Dr Munther Isaac, who addressed the theme “Christ in the Rubble: Faith, the Bible, and the Genocide in Gaza.” His reflection powerfully connected the suffering of Palestinians with biblical narratives of lament and hope.
The second keynote, delivered by Dr Janneke Stegeman, challenged participants to confront European Christian complicity in ongoing systems of oppression, drawing on both historical and contemporary examples.
Later in the day, attendees joined “speed lectures” and a Q&A session featuring Amira Hanania, who spoke about the systematic violence experienced by Palestinians, including the devastation of Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank.
During the day, we also had the opportunity to meet with colleagues from Tent of Nations Netherlands, as well as representatives from other partner NGOs with whom we collaborate regularly.
The Pax Christi delegation engaged actively and expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to hear Palestinian Christian voices, reflect on complicity, and discern faithful responses grounded in nonviolence and justice.
Pax Christi International continues to stand in solidarity with local voices and remains committed to amplifying the call for a just peace in Palestine.
