“There can be no true peace without climate justice, and no climate justice without peace.”
This is the core message around which, on 8 September 2025, a webinar was convened with the participation of the Secretary Generals of Caritas Internationalis, CIDSE and Pax Christi International. The initiative, facilitated by SCIAF, resulted in the release of a joint statement entitled “Pilgrims of Hope for a Just and Peaceful World”.
The declaration strongly highlights the interconnections between ecological challenges, violent conflicts and persistent poverty, portraying them as intertwined strands of a single global threat that must be addressed.
“The war industry and the fossil fuel industry are inextricably linked. Both feed off inequality and short-term interests instead of the long-term common good,” said Martha Inés Romero, Secretary General of Pax Christi International.
“We must reject this path and instead build systems of active non-violence, deepening harmony with each other and with the Earth.”
The initiative aims to raise global awareness and lay the foundations for a robust process of change, ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
