A little over a week after the military aggression by the United States, the political situation in Venezuela remains rather delicate. Once again, the future of many people seems to be subject to economic and geopolitical dynamics, with little regard for the rule of law and respect for human principles, which are currently at serious risk.

Immediately following the events of 3 January, Pax Christi International published a declaration condemning the violence (available here); this is followed by a Statement calling for a Nonviolent Peace, released on the occasion of the Epiphany by the two Co-Presidents and the Secretary General.

Nonviolence,” it is said, “is more than the absence of war; it is a spirituality, a way of life, and a universal ethic. Nonviolence, as a constructive antidote, transforms the roots of direct, structural, and cultural violence. It is always active, never passive, and goes beyond pacifism”.

The appeal of Pax Christi International joins that of the Church in Venezuela in a global call to end all forms of violence and oppression against the people, to promote global disarmament and multilateral diplomacy and to urge the United States to respect international law.
