Following the serious events that took place in Venezuela, with the military operation launched by the United States in the early hours of 3 January, a very large number of NGOs and humanitarian organisations have expressed firm condemnation of the aggression and of the bypassing of international law. Regardless of assessments of the Venezuelan government, what has occurred has laid the groundwork for a highly dangerous precedent, further destabilising the many global geopolitical tensions with which 2026 has begun.

Pax Christi International has published a statement (available here in English and Spanish) calling for the immediate cessation of military operations in Venezuela, inspired by the words with which Pope Leo XIV opened the year on the occasion of the World Day of Peace. Many other organisations connected to our network have also spoken out, calling unequivocally for peace to be preserved through nonviolent and unarmed action.
