Pax Christi International is concerned by the new mining law passed on 23 December 2024 in El Salvador. Mining would increase the country’s risk of environmental contamination, human rights violations, and public health concerns. In December 2024, our Co-Presidents sent a letter of support (read here in Spanish) to the Church and the people of El Salvador in the days following the passing of this law.
We join on a coalition of 297 organisations from 44 countries and territories calling on President Bukele to keep mining out of El Salvador. In addition, we call for the charges against the five water defenders set to face a second trial starting on 3 February 2025 to be dropped, as they have been found innocent in October 2024.
