Harvesting the rich and challenging experience of practiced nonviolence to guide the Church and the world
In September 2024, given the challenges presented by ongoing wars and egregious violence, Pax Christi International’s Catholic Nonviolence Initiative (CNI) established the Catholic Institute for Nonviolence, bringing experiences of nonviolence from the peripheries around the world into dialogue with researchers, theologians and Church leaders. CNI understands nonviolence as a spirituality, a way of life, a spectrum of methods for social transformation and, potentially, a universal ethic. The Institute will be predominately virtual with a small presence in Rome.
The mission of the Catholic Institute for Nonviolence is to make nonviolence research, resources and experience, more accessible to Catholic Church leaders, communities and institutions in order to deepen Catholic understanding of and commitment to the practice of Gospel nonviolence.

The inaugural event took place in Rome on Sunday, September 29, at 4:00 pm CET.
During the event, we also presented the 2023 Pax Christi Peace Award to the Parents’ Circle – Family Forum (PCFF), a joint Israeli-Palestinian organization of families who have lost relatives to the ongoing conflict.
For those who were unable to attend in person, the event was livestreamed and recorded. You can watch the full livestream here. The panel discussion is available here, and the Peace Award ceremony can be viewed here.
Pax Christi International and the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative extend their heartfelt gratitude to those who made this groundbreaking effort possible.
