Skills for the ecological conversion: inspiration from “Ora et Labora”
Taizé (France), 16 -19 November 2023
From November 16 to 19, 2023, Giulia Bordin, PCI Advocacy Officer, participated in the enlightening ELSiA Ecospirituality workshop hosted in Taizé (France). The primary objective of the event was to investigate the convergence of manual work and spirituality, drawing inspiration from practices like Ora et Labora, with a keen focus on integrating ecospiritual principles into daily life and work.
The inaugural session, led by John Paul de Quay and Michael Kuhn, delved into the Ecological Conversion Group. This initiative, initially conceived by three Catholic young adults in response to Pope Francis’ Encyclical letter, Laudato Si’ On Care of Our Common Home, has evolved into a registered charity dedicated to galvanizing action for the care of creation.
The workshop further explored transformative concepts for reshaping the world of work through engaging sessions such as “Winds of Change: the SPES framework” by Prof. Mario Biggeri and “Enlarge the Circle of Compassion: An Introduction to Animals as a Christian Concern” by Barbara Niedźwiedzka and Estela Torres.
A significant highlight of the workshop revolved around the significance of rest, with Br Richard of Taizé offering thoughtful reflections on the Sabbath tradition. Br Richard, a longstanding member of the Taizé Community, shared insights into the contemporary relevance of Sabbath practices, referencing biblical passages and highlighting the concept of God’s rest, inviting contemporary participation.
The workshop provided a unique and enriching opportunity for attendees, fostering a deeper understanding of ecospirituality and offering practical insights into its integration into their daily lives and professional endeavors. The same teachings of ecospirituality that come from ancestral communities in Latin America, Aotearoa, and Africa with ancient wisdom, emphasizing interconnectedness and Earth’s sacred nature. Indigenous traditions stress harmonious relationships with nature, highlighting a living connection between humans and the environment. These teachings offer insights into sustainable practices, biodiversity, and holistic well-being, guiding us towards a spiritually enriched coexistence with the planet amid ecological challenges.
