This week, representatives from Pax Christi International, EBCO (European Bureau for Conscientious Objection), Connection e.V., War Resisters’ International, and the Quaker Council for European Affairs came together at the European Parliament for a series of exchanges with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). These meetings provided an important opportunity to raise awareness of the ongoing violations of, and insufficient protections for, the human right to conscientious objection to military service across Europe.

Alarmingly, these violations are not only persistent but increasing. Both EU citizens and individuals seeking asylum within the European Union on the grounds of conscientious objection are facing growing challenges, from legal uncertainty and lack of recognition to punitive measures and inadequate protection mechanisms. Despite being recognised under international human rights standards, this fundamental right is still not consistently upheld across European countries and at EU level.

The discussions with MEPs aimed to bring these concerning trends into sharper focus, share concrete cases, and call for stronger, coordinated EU-level action to ensure that the right to conscientious objection is fully respected, protected, and implemented for all.

This engagement marks one of many steps in a broader effort to build political will within the European Union and to advocate for meaningful safeguards for conscientious objectors.

Looking ahead, May 15th, International Conscientious Objection to Military Service Day, offers a timely opportunity to deepen reflection, raise awareness, and strengthen solidarity around this issue.

We invite you to join this collective effort: share your planned activities, initiatives, or events for the day, and help bring greater visibility to the importance of protecting this right!
