With heavy hearts yet deep gratitude, we remember and celebrate the life of Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez, OP, father of liberation theology and founder of the Instituto Bartolomé de Las Casas. He passed away at the age of 96.

His work transformed the Church’s understanding of justice and taught us the preferential option for the poor, inspiring movements across Latin America and beyond.

Our Secretary General, Martha Inés Romero, chose to honour him with these words:

“He continues being an inspiration for all of us who believe in the Gospel of Peace, Justice, and Active Nonviolence!”

We also invite you to read a beautiful reflection written a month ago by Joseph Nangle, OFM, Pax Christi USA’s 2023 Teacher of Peace, recalling the special moments he shared with Fr. Gustavo. Click here to read it.

Though we mourn his passing, we also give thanks for the gift of his life and the enduring impact of his work. His prophetic voice will keep guiding us in the fight for peace, justice, and dignity for all.

Gustavo Gutiérrez, ¡presente!
