We join our dear brothers and sisters at Pax Christi Australia in mourning the loss of Ann Brady, a long-standing friend and devoted contributor to the movement.

Ann played a key role in the early years of Pax Christi in Australia, serving as chair from 1975 to 1977, and remained a passionate advocate for peace, justice, and ecumenical dialogue throughout her life.

We warmly encourage you to read the moving tribute by Joseph Camilleri included in the Pax Christi Australia newsletter (page 11).

Rita and I first met Ann in 1974 soon after we established Pax Christi in Australia. What brought us together was an extraordinary coincidence. We had a mutual friend, Bruce Kent, the charismatic figure that became one of the leading voices for peace in the UK and beyond. Bruce was for many years the Chap- lain of Pax Christi in England, and the driving force in its early develop- ment. During my stay in England (1969- 72), we became close friends. Once Ann heard from Bruce that there were moves afoot to get Pax Christi off the ground in Melbourne, she contacted me and expressed interest. Before long Ann became active in the fledgling organisation, and soon assumed the chairing role, a position she held for three years (1975-1977). She brought to the organisation unique talents, especially her vitality, a keen interest in issues of peace and justice, and generous hospitality. Being an Anglican and married to Jim Brady, an Anglican minister, Ann was able to give effective expression to Pax Christi’s commitment to ecumenical peacemaking. Many of Pax Christi’s memorable social events were held at Ann’s and Jim’s spacious residence at 63 Queensberry Street, Carlton. Ann was especially adept at extending a warm welcome to everyone, and encouraging their ongoing par- ticipation in the life of Pax Christi. In later years, Ann assumed other responsibilities. She was a committed supporter of East Timor, an active and well informed Friend of the Queen Victoria Market, and a dedicated secondary school teacher. She taught for some 35 years at the Catholic girls’ school, Star of the Sea College, where she became the HSC coordinator with particular responsibility for religious education (Ann had a degree in biblical studies). Pax Christi Vic is deeply saddened at the death of this longstanding friend of Pax Christi. Our heartfelt condolences go to Jim, and their children, Sebastian and Emma.
