During the official Launch of the Divest in Mining Platform, proposed by the Churches and Mining Network (Red Iglesias y Minerìa) and the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), also Martha Inés Romero, Secretary General of Pax Christi International, gave a speech.

The initiative was born as a concrete action rooted in the principles of Laudato Si’, promoting ethical coherence between faith and financial practices. Its aim is to educate, reflect, and act to ensure that the resources of faith-based organisations prioritise the common good and the care of our Common Home, above profit.

Pax Christi International, a member of the Churches and Mining Network, also joins the call to stewardship of creation, respecting and supporting nature and all communities, not only in the Global South, which risk being impoverished due to land exploitation and global power agreements.

In this regard, Martha Inés Romero also highlighted the important connection between mining activities and the global arms race. “Our response must be based both on our role as people of faith and on our pragmatic position,” she said. “We follow the words of Pope Leo on a disarmed and disarming peace, which cannot exist until we recognise the sovereignty of communities and nature over economic logics.”
