On May 19th –20th, Pax Christi International (PCI) had the opportunity to participate in the European Humanitarian Forum held in Brussels. The gathering brought together key humanitarian actors, policymakers, and civil society to address pressing global crises.

PCI paid particular attention to the discussions on the ongoing humanitarian needs in Sudan, the Middle East, and the escalating food crisis in the Sahel region. These areas, marked by protracted conflict and structural fragility, urgently require unimpeded humanitarian access and sustained international attention.

We strongly believe that the delivery of impartial and unhindered humanitarian aid is not just a logistical necessity, it is a human rights imperative. Ensuring that such aid reaches all those in need is vital for upholding the dignity of affected populations and for the proper implementation of international humanitarian law (IHL) and broader human rights frameworks.

We echo the calls made throughout the forum for the European Union to reinforce its commitment to independent, neutral, and non-government affiliated humanitarian support. A principled and rights-based approach must be at the heart of the EU’s external action.

Moreover, while effective humanitarian responses are crucial, it is equally important to address the root causes of fragility and violence. Sustainable peace can only emerge by tackling the underlying political, social, and economic drivers of conflict.

Pax Christi International will continue to advocate for peace, justice, and human dignity, and we are grateful for the space to engage with partners and policymakers at forums such as this.
