WASHINGTON (March 11, 2025)—The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was the setting for Cardinal Robert McElroy’s installation Mass as the new archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington. The ceremony brought together more than 3,500 people, including religious leaders, laypeople, and representatives from various organizations dedicated to peace and social justice. Marie Dennis, director of the Catholic Institute for Nonviolence, attended on behalf of Pax Christi International. Charlene Howard, Judy Coode, and Stephen Niamke from Pax Christi USA were also present.

His Eminence Cardinal McElroy, a member of the advisory council for the Catholic Institute for Nonviolence, previously served as bishop of San Diego from 2015 to 2025. He has been a strong advocate for social justice and nonviolence.

During his homily, he emphasized the importance of hope and compassion in uncertain times. “Mercy and compassion must be our first impulse when confronted with sin and human failure, for hope arises when we confront ourselves as we truly are, understanding that the bountiful, merciful love of God is without limit, and undertake the call to live out the teachings of the Church and be sacraments of mercy to others. We are a Church which believes that love and truth do meet. That is precisely our glory as the children of God.”

His arrival in the archdiocese marks the beginning of a new phase of leadership focused on inclusion and advocacy for the most vulnerable. With his experience in San Diego and alignment with Pope Francis’ teachings, McElroy takes on the challenge of strengthening a Church committed to the Gospel and addressing contemporary societal issues.
