From June 1st to 5th 2026, the biennial United Nations meeting on the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons took place in New York. The event, held just a few days after the conclusion of the Eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), brought together around 140 Member States, along with international organisations and a selected number of NGOs working in the field of disarmament.
Pax Christi International attended the meeting with a delegation composed by Mary T. Yelenick, PCI’s Main Representative at UN New York, and Nicholas Mele, PCI’s Additional Representative at UN New York and Adviser on Nuclear Disarmament.

Despite a strong spirit of regional cooperation among representatives of States, UN agencies and civil society, the final stage of the conference was marked by certain divergences that prevented the adoption of the concluding document.
In line with our mission to promote peace and justice, Pax Christi International will continue to contribute actively to international processes aimed at preventing armed violence and building just conditions for human security based on active nonviolence and social welfare.
The report prepared by Nicholas Mele following the meeting is available below for reading and download.
