Goodbye, Pope Francis
Thank you, Your Holiness!
Today, April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away in Rome at the age of 88. On behalf of Pax Christi International, we join in the grief of the world, raising our prayers for his eternal rest. We deeply thank God for his life, his leadership, and his tireless commitment to building a more just, nonviolent, and compassionate world.
A Legacy of Mercy and Nonviolence
During his pontificate, Pope Francis was a steadfast defender of the Gospel values, especially mercy, peace, and nonviolence. In each of his interventions, he reminded us that we must follow Jesus. He also urged us to build a “culture of peace” based on respect for human dignity and the rejection of violence in all its forms.
Over the course of his ten-year papacy, Pope Francis played a critical role in advancing nonviolence. His appeal for the world to pray for a nonviolent culture was one of many calls for the Church and the world to embrace active and creative nonviolence in response to a global culture of violence and injustice. Confronting the reality of violence with transformative Gospel nonviolence became a consistent theme of his teachings.
As His Holiness said to three French activists he met: “Start a revolution, shake things up. The world is deaf; you have to open its ears.” Francis himself embodied this revolutionary spirit, urging a nonviolent revolution that prioritizes the well-being of all, especially the most rejected, excluded, and under attack.
Pope Francis relentlessly taught us that the answer to violence is not more violence. Rather than resolving humanity’s greatest challenges, violence often perpetuates and escalates them. During a 2017 encounter with the Anti-Defamation League, he proclaimed: “Faced with too much violence spreading throughout the world, we are called to a greater nonviolence, which does not mean passivity, but active promotion of the good.”
This “greater nonviolence,” as Pope Francis envisioned, involves rejecting the temptation of violence, loving our enemies, responding to evil with good (Romans 12:17-21), breaking the spiral of violence, and creating potential for reconciliation.

A Global Call for Reconciliation
Pope Francis not only encouraged the Church to work for peace but also made a strong call to world leaders to commit to resolving conflicts peacefully and without resorting to violence.
During the 50th World Day of Peace, he reminded us that: “Violence is not the solution to our fragmented world. Responding to violence with violence leads, at best, to forced emigration and enormous suffering, as vast amounts of resources allocated to military purposes are diverted from the daily needs of young people, families in need, the elderly, the sick, the vast majority of the world’s inhabitants. At worst, it leads to the physical and spiritual death of many, if not all.”
Eternal Gratitude
Francis’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless work in favor of peace, nonviolence, and social justice. On behalf of the entire Pax Christi International family, we are profoundly grateful to Pope Francis for being a beacon of light in a world marked by conflict.

Hoy, 21 de abril de 2025, el Papa Francisco falleció en Roma a la edad de 88 años. En nombre de Pax Christi Internacional, nos unimos al luto del mundo, elevando nuestras oraciones por su eterno descanso. Agradecemos profundamente a Dios por su vida, su liderazgo y su incansable compromiso con la construcción de un mundo más justo, no violento y compasivo.
Un legado de misericordia y no violencia
Durante su pontificado, el Papa Francisco fue un defensor inquebrantable de los valores del Evangelio, especialmente la misericordia, la paz y la no violencia. En cada una de sus intervenciones, nos recordó que debemos caminar en el camino de Jesús. También nos instó a construir una “cultura de paz” basada en el respeto por la dignidad humana y el rechazo de la violencia en todas sus formas.
A lo largo de sus diez años de papado, el Papa Francisco desempeñó un papel crucial en el avance de la no violencia. Su llamado al mundo a orar por una cultura no violenta fue una de muchas invitaciones a la Iglesia y al mundo para adoptar una no violencia activa y creativa como respuesta a una cultura global de violencia e injusticia. Confrontar la realidad de la violencia con una no violencia transformadora del Evangelio se convirtió en un tema constante de sus enseñanzas.
Como Su Santidad dijo a tres activistas franceses que conoció: “Inicien una revolución, sacudan las cosas. El mundo está sordo; tienen que abrirle los oídos.” El mismo Francisco encarnó este espíritu revolucionario, impulsando una revolución no violenta que prioriza el bienestar de todos, especialmente de los más rechazados, excluidos y atacados.
El Papa Francisco enseñó incansablemente que la respuesta a la violencia no es más violencia. En lugar de resolver los mayores desafíos de la humanidad, la violencia a menudo los perpetúa y los agrava. Durante un encuentro en 2017 con la Liga Antidifamación, proclamó: “Ante la demasiada violencia que se extiende por todo el mundo, estamos llamados a una no violencia mayor, que no significa pasividad, sino la promoción activa del bien.”
Esta “no violencia mayor”, como la vislumbraba el Papa Francisco, implica rechazar la tentación de la violencia, amar a nuestros enemigos, responder al mal con el bien (Romanos 12:17-21), romper el espiral de la violencia y crear posibilidades de reconciliación.
Un llamado global a la reconciliación

Eterna gratitud

Danke, Eure Heiligkeit!
Heute, am 21. April 2025, ist Papst Franziskus im Alter von 88 Jahren in Rom verstorben. Im Namen von Pax Christi International schließen wir uns der Trauer der Welt an und beten für seine ewige Ruhe. Wir danken Gott zutiefst für sein Leben, seine Führung und seinen unermüdlichen Einsatz für eine gerechtere, gewaltfreiere und mitfühlendere Welt.
Ein Vermächtnis der Barmherzigkeit und Gewaltlosigkeit
Während seines Pontifikats war Papst Franziskus ein unerschütterlicher Verteidiger der Werte des Evangeliums, insbesondere der Barmherzigkeit, des Friedens und der Gewaltlosigkeit. In jedem seiner Ansprachen erinnerte er uns daran, dass wir Jesus nachfolgen müssen. Er forderte uns außerdem auf, eine „Kultur des Friedens“ aufzubauen, die auf Respekt vor der Menschenwürde und der Ablehnung von Gewalt in all ihren Formen basiert.

Aujourd’hui, 21 avril 2025, le pape François est décédé à Rome à l’âge de 88 ans. Au nom de Pax Christi International, nous nous unissons au deuil du monde entier et élevons nos prières pour son repos éternel. Nous remercions profondément Dieu pour sa vie, son leadership et son engagement
inlassable en faveur d’un monde plus juste, nonviolent et compatissant.
Un héritage de miséricorde et de nonviolence
Pendant son pontificat, le pape François fut un défenseur infatigable des valeurs de l’Évangile, en particulier la miséricorde, la paix et la nonviolence. À travers chacune de ses interventions, il nous a rappelé que nous devons marcher sur le chemin de Jésus. Il nous a également exhortés à construire
une « culture de paix » fondée sur le respect de la dignité humaine et le rejet de toute forme de violence.
