Israel’s breaking of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip by its overnight onslaught has led to further death and destruction, deepening the suffering of innocent civilian and it represents an unconscionable violation of the terms of the ceasefire. Over 400 Palestinians have been killed, with countless others wounded as they celebrate the holy month of Ramadan.

Moreover, the hostage situation remains urgent. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum has condemned the renewed attacks on Gaza, saying that the war is being renewed for the release of the hostages is completely deceptive, and Israel’s military pressure endangers the hostages. “We must return to the ceasefire”[i]. This adds another painful dimension to the already horrific situation, and it is critical that negotiations for the second and third phases of ceasefire talks receive full attention and implementation to ensure their safe return.

For 16 days[ii] Israel has also illegally blocked humanitarian aid from entering Gaza. Starvation is being used as a weapon of war, with the people of Gaza suffering not only from violence but from the denial of water, food, medical supplies, and other basic necessities. This intentional humanitarian crisis is an affront to human rights and dignity and a deliberate rebuke of international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, in the West Bank there is increased violence from Israeli soldiers and settlers on Palestinian communities, including raids, home demolitions, destruction of olive groves, abductions and the killing and wounding of many women, men and children.

This escalation has made the already fragile situation much worse. Decades of Israel’s occupation, systematic violations of international law, and the ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people cannot be overlooked. We are reminded that only justice, dialogue, and respect for human dignity can lead to a lasting and Just Peace.

The silence of the international community in the face of these ongoing violations perpetuates the cycle of violence and repression.

We ask for all parties involved to reinstall the ceasefire and to respect it and the agreements signed.

We continue to urge decision-makers to prioritise international law over their own interests.

We pray for a Just Peace, and we call on the international community to act with courage and urgency, demanding an immediate end to the blockade, a halt to the violence, and a renewed commitment to implementing human rights for all.
