Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent: the “Sunday of Joy” for Christians around the world, who await the now imminent coming of Christ to earth, transforming a time of waiting and hope into the joy of Christmas.

This shared feeling, however, is more difficult to sustain when we reflect on the situation in Myanmar, which continues to face a very serious political and social crisis. The earthquake that struck a few months ago has further put the hope of the Burmese people to the test, making a Just Peace seem an even more distant goal today.

On this Sunday, we share a reflection by Caesar D’Mello of Pax Christi Australia and a prayer by Gail Galang of Pax Christi Philippines, so that the world may not remain unaware of what is happening in Myanmar. Like the Star of Bethlehem, which two thousand years ago travelled to an almost unknown place to celebrate the coming of the Saviour of the world in the silence of humility, today we seek to turn our gaze to a part of the world that we too often forget, in order to support our brothers and sisters through prayer and through our nonviolent action.
