Pope Leo XIV’s latest encyclical draws attention to a culture of power that prioritises the geopolitical and economic interests of a privileged few. Such interests, however, must never be allowed to take precedence over human rights and human dignity.

In the Asia Pacific region, this reflection is particularly timely. Growing geopolitical tensions, strategic competition between major powers, rising military expenditure, and deep social and economic inequalities continue to affect the lives of millions of people. In the light of Magnifica Humanitas, the webinar will provide a space for dialogue on how to promote a just and lasting peace founded on the common good, placing people at the centre rather than the interests of power.

🔹The Prophetic Call of a ‘Civilisation of Love’ to Choose Peace, Justice and Dialogue in Asia by Fr. Cedric Pakash, SJ, Ahmedabad, India. A Jesuit with studies in Economics and Politics, he founded ‘Prashant’, the Jesuit centre for human rights, justice and peace. As a visiting lecturer, speaker and trainer, he advocates for the excluded and exploited. The reality of the Muslims in Gujarat troubles him.

🔹The Leadership of Women in Shaping a Civilisation of Love by Sr. Dr. Susan Connelly, SOSJ, Sydney, Australia. Now in a Josephite leadership position, Susan worked for decades in Timor -Leste and is much concerned about the West Papuans. Involved with justice through articles and talks, her PhD applied René Girard’s thought to Australia’s relationship to Timor.

🔹Interpreting Pope Leo’s Civilisation of Love through a Pacific lens by Rev. James Bhagwan, Suva, Fiji. As General Secretary, Pacific Conference of Churches, he works with Oceania’s 35 member churches and 11 national councils of churches. His roots traced to labourers brought to Fiji by the British, he is committed to leading on social justice, climate change and gender issues.
