Pax Christi International Declaration on the European Union Parliament Elections

Today, on the same day the Treaty of Paris was signed establishing the first steps for what we now know as the European Union, we release a statement urging future MEPs to commit to a present and future where nonviolence is considered a cornerstone of the EU’s security strategy.

Amid challenges ranging from post-pandemic recovery to violence and extremism, there is an urgent need for MEPs to prioritise peace, solidarity, and human rights in shaping the EU’s direction for the next five years.

We ask them to earnestly engage in ongoing dialogue with civil society organisations, ensuring that no one is left behind, and to proactively advocate for an EU representing a beacon of peace in the world, fostering positive collaboration with other regions where peace, stability, and human rights may inadvertently suffer when economic and political interests take precedence.

We invite you to join us in advocating for a future founded on nonviolent principles and enduring Just Peace. Please share this statement with candidates for the upcoming EU elections.
