It is with heavy hearts that we join our brothers and sisters at Pax Christi USA in mourning the loss of our beloved friend, Fr. Joe Nangle, OFM.

Fr. Joe was truly one of a kind—a pastor who deeply embodied the values of Saint Francis. He was a humble servant, a tireless advocate for peace and justice, and a beacon of hope for so many. His life’s work reflected his unwavering commitment to standing with the most vulnerable and amplifying the voices of the oppressed.

A dedicated member of the Pax Christi family, Fr. Joe served as Pax Christi USA’s Ambassador of Peace and was honoured in 2023 with the prestigious Teacher of Peace Award. He was also an active and enthusiastic board member and advisor for the Pax Christi Fund for Peace, promoting the mission of Pax Christi International in the United States, with passion and conviction.

Fr. Joe participated in numerous gatherings and events across our movement at both national and international levels. A particularly cherished moment was in 2015, when he celebrated the Mass for our 70th anniversary in Bethlehem, beside the Separation Wall—a profound symbol of hope and resilience.

Reflecting on his deep connection to Latin America, Martha Inés Romero, Pax Christi International’s Secretary General, shared:

“Fr. Joe carried a profound affection for our region. He walked alongside the people of Latin America with love, solidarity, and a relentless commitment to justice. His presence will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.”

As we mourn this tremendous loss, we extend our love and prayers to his closest ones, including his friends and family at the Assisi Community, which he co-founded.

Fr. Joe’s legacy will continue to inspire all of us as we carry forward our mission of peace and justice. Fr. Joe Nangle, OFM, ¡Presente!

Fr. Joe’s funeral will be held on Saturday, December 21 at Our Lady Queen of Peace (OLQP) Catholic Church, 2700 S. 19th Street, Arlington, VA, 22204; viewing will be held at 11 am (Eastern) and Mass at 12 pm. The Mass will be live-streamed on OLQP’s website.
