Mid-term evaluation
From May 4 to 15, 2025, Pax Christi International carried out a mid-term evaluation of the “Empowering Religious Sisters on Active Nonviolence and Peacebuilding” programme across three dioceses in Kenya: Nakuru, Kisumu, and Kericho.
The evaluation focused on understanding the progress, impact, and challenges of the ongoing training sessions led by religious sisters in schools, parishes, and communities.

Listening to the Voices of Change
The evaluation team, led by Mr. A. Dieudonné Serukabuza, Pax Christi International Africa Programme Coordinator, visited diverse groups of beneficiaries, students, youth, women, religious sisters, and novices, accompanied by the trainer sisters. In each location, participants shared how the training has positively influenced their communication, behavior, and ability to mediate conflict.
From poems and songs to inspiring skits portraying figures like Gandhi and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., young people brought their learning to life in creative ways. These were powerful reminders that the seeds of peace are already taking root.
In Kericho, the team had the honor of meeting Rt. Rev. Alfred Rotich, bishop and long-time supporter of peace initiatives. In Kisumu and Nakuru, engagements with youth groups, schools, and religious communities affirmed the widespread appreciation for the training. The trainer sisters also shared personal testimonies on how the project is transforming their lives and ministries.
Encouraging Results
In just two months (March–April 2025), 207 religious sisters and over 6,500 young people have been trained in active nonviolence and peacebuilding. Feedback gathered through post-session questionnaires and interviews highlighted:
- Positive changes in attitudes, behavior, and conflict resolution skills
- Increased commitment among the trainer sisters, who wish to continue their work even beyond the project timeline
- The growing demand to reach more groups, including teachers, women, and adult community members
A Shared Commitment
The evaluation concluded with words of encouragement for the trainer sisters, whose dedication and creativity have been vital. Though one sister relocated to Italy, a new trainer, Sr. Joséphine, a university lecturer in Kisumu, has joined with enthusiasm and experience.
One message came through clearly: this is not just a project, it is a vocation. Sisters expressed their willingness to continue the training as volunteers, confident that active nonviolence must become a permanent part of their ministry.
“Active Nonviolence is transforming lives. Even if the project ends, we will continue. It’s our calling.”
